The national scam, identity and cyber support service, IDCARE, recorded a 37.5 per cent rise in calls about the "Hi Mum" text scam in 2024.

It says scammers continue to exploit the emotions of parents, three years after the first messages were reported in Australia.

The charity says the warnings given in a public awareness campaign in 2022 may be slipping from people's minds.
